Two Chinese words that often pop up in Chinese conversation are “还有(háiyǒu)” and “还是(háishì).” Although “还有(háiyǒu)” and “还是(háishì)” share the same adverb, “还(hái),” the meanings and usages of the two words are quite different from each other.

还有(háiyǒu)

In the Chinese language, “还有(háiyǒu)” is usually used in a declarative sentence to mean “and,” “besides,” “in addition,” and so on.

The structures is: Noun1 + “还有(háiyǒu)” + Noun2

Examples

Lǎogōng: Qīn’ài de, nǐ jīntiān qù shāngchǎng mǎi le shénme?
老公:      亲爱  的,你 今天   去  商场             买   了 什么?
Husband: Dear, what did you buy today at the mall?

Lǎopo: Yíjiàn wàiyī, liǎngtiáo kùzi,   háiyǒu yìshuāng xié.
老婆:  一件  外衣,两条       裤子,还有    一双         鞋。
Wife: A coat, two pairs of trousers, and a pair of shoes.

Zhāng Lì: Nǐ yǐqián lái guò Zhōng’guó ma?
张 丽:     你 以前   来 过   中国            吗?
Zhang Li: Have you ever come to China before?

Betty: Lái guò! Wǒ qù guò Běijīng, Shànghǎi, háiyǒu Xī’ān.
Betty:来 过! 我   去 过   北京、  上海,       还有     西安。
Betty: I have! I have been to Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an.

还是(háishì)

“还是(háishì)” is usually used in a question and means “or.” The speaker uses it to ask someone to make a choice between two things.

The structure: Subject + Verb + Option A + “还是(háishì) + Option B?

Examples

Linda:   Nǐ xǐhuan Bruce háishì Jack?
Linda:你 喜欢     Bruce  还是  Jack?
Linda: Do you like Bruce or Jack?

Wáng Xīn: Wǒ xǐhuan Bruce.
王 心:      我   喜欢    Bruce。
Wang Xin: I like Bruce.

Nǐ xiǎng zuò gōngjiāo chē háishì chéng dìtiě?
你 想      坐   公交       车   还是    乘       地铁?
Do you want to take the bus or the subway?

Nǐ shénme shíhou qù yīyuàn? Zǎochén háishì xiàwǔ?
你 什么       时候     去 医院?  早晨         还是   下午?
When will you go to the hospital? In the morning or in the afternoon?

In our test, Judy has tea and coffee available. Then, she wants Li Ming to make a choice between tea and coffee, so the correct answer is B.
